Contributed by Jenny Matthews Weight gain during pregnancy is vital to having a healthy pregnancy. You really need to have a healthy weight throughout the entire pregnancy to have an easier labor and faster recovery. I am going to break down how much you should really gain throughout your pregnancy, and how you can avoid gaining too much weight. Gaining too much weight can make labor really hard, while gaining not enough weight can result in some health issues. The average weight gain from the beginning to the end of pregnancy is usually between 25 and 35 pounds. It can vary a little depending on your body structure and how much you weigh before you get pregnant. If you are the right weight for your height, then you should look at gaining anywhere from 25-35 pounds. You will gain around 5 pounds in your first trimester, and average 1 pound per week during your second and third trimester. If you are underweight when you get pregnant, you should look at gaining 35 pounds. You should have a goal at gaining around 6-8 pounds during your first trimester, and a little over 1 pound per week during the second and third trimester. If you start out overweight when you get pregnant, you are going to want to gain around 15 pounds throughout the entire pregnancy. You should gain around 3 pounds during your first trimester, and 1 pound every other week during the second and third trimester. It is very important that you eat healthy foods and keep a close eye on your weight. If you don't, you could easily gain double what is recommended, which can lead to issues during labor and recovery. If you find that you have gained more than 5 pounds in a week, you need to see your doctor or midwife. It could be a sign of Preeclampsia, which is a serious health issue when pregnant. You also want to see your doctor or midwife if you have not gained any weight over a 2 week time. Weight gain is essential and needs to be taken seriously. Just because you gain weight does not mean that you are going to get fat. Yes, you will get a bump on your belly, but if you follow a proper eating plan, you should be fit and toned-up throughout the pregnancy. But, if you don't follow any kind of meal plan and eat what you want all the time, you could gain a lot of extra pounds that you do not want. Those extra pounds can be really hard to get off after delivery.
